Dirt Maker Flow-Through Worm Bins

The worm bin is started by putting a layer of newspaper on the screen, filling the box half-full of worm bedding, and adding one pound of worms per sq ft. The worm bin is fed a little at a time until it fills up. By then, the newspaper has decomposed, and the vermicomposted material sticks together, resting on the screen. Then the cutting bar is pulled by a winch on our manually operated models, slicing off a thin layer of vermicompost which falls through the screen. The remainder of the material settles as one mass, resting again on the screen. The worm bin fills up again after one or two more feedings. Then the cutting bar is pulled the other direction by the other winch, removing more vermicompost.

These machines have a tough baked-on UV resistant coating.

The cutting bar is made of stainless steel for corrosion resistance. All of the fasteners exposed to the vermicomposting process are also stainless steel. The cutting bar has been sharpened, and slides on slippery UHMW strips, which keep it from abrading the screen. The sharp bar and slippery UHMW make the winches easy to turn on our manually operated models, and reduce power consumption on our large industrial model.

The skin on the side panels is made from almost indestructible UV resistant HDPE.

The screen openings are 1.8" x 1.8". They are large enough to allow finished vermicompost through when pulling the cutting bar, and small enough to prevent cave-ins which can occur with larger openings.

The box on top of the screen is 2' deep. This ideal depth allows for an adequate vermicomposting period while keeping the top of the worm bin low enough for easy feeding.
